Ninety Sri Lankans residing in refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, India, are due to arrive in the country today, Tuesday, September 13.
The group are being brought to the country with the assistance of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
According to the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, the group that will arrive in the country today will comprise of 45 men and 45 women.
Fifty four of these Sri Lankans resided in refugee camps in Trichi, while the other 36 were in camps in Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation and Resettlement points out that since the incumbent government came into office in January 2015, 4945 Sri Lankans residing in Indian refugee camps have been brought to the country.
The Ministry further notes that nearly 65,000 Sri Lankans are residing in refugee camps in India while thousands more are living with relatives in India.
