HRC focusses attention on alleged police assault case in Hambantota

The Human Rights Commission has focussed its attention on an incident in which the life of a person was put on the line because he was suspected of stealing paddy.

G.G. Gayashan, a-20-year old residing in Hambantota was reported missing on September 5, 2016. Its been six days since G.G. Gayeshan was reported missing.

The residents of the area say that two individuals, including this youth, were arrested by police for allegedly stealing a stock of paddy. One of the arrested suspects is currently receiving treatment at the Hambantota Teaching Hospital following an alleged assault by the police.

Officers of the Human Rights Commission visited the  residence of the youth, who was reported missing while in police custody, to conduct investigations into the incident. When inquired, the police stated that the youth escaped when attempts were made to arrest him.
