A tank is considered the heart of the village.
However, agriculture in Digannewa, Nikaweratiya is on the verge of disappearing for good, due to a damage in the bund of the tank that supplies water to the paddy fields in the area.
The Digannewa Maha Wewa Tank in Nikaweratiya nourishes over 400 acres of paddy field, which also benefits over 500 agrarian families. The tank-bund suffered a damage following the torrential rainfall experienced last May. Farmers joined hands to set up a sand blockade that would save the village from flooding. However this was just a temporary solution, and authorities have failed to rectify this issue.
The farmers who were deceived by authorities, who they say, made false promises to renovate the tank, have been compelled to let go of agricultural activities and stay in hunger. What they attempt now is to at least engage in farming their during the next season. However, those hopes may be washed away with the rains that fall before the harvesting season.
