The Northern tracks end at the Kankesanthurai Train Station.However, on early Saturday morning, the final stop of the north bound train was another 140 feet beyond the stop point.
Train number 4442 from Jaffna to Colombo had derailed on Saturday morning as the driver had lost control of the train’s speed.The train had moved ahead 140 feet forward, due to a fault in its brakes.
The train engine and two compartments were damaged following the incident. The Railways Control Room said that there was a fault in the brakes since Friday after it crashed into some cattle. However, the train resumed operations on Saturday following temporary repairs.
The Railways Control Room said that the derailment was caused by the same fault.
Technical officers of the Anuradhapura Control Room had been called to put the derailed train back on track. The General Manager of Railways B.A.P.Ariyaratne said that the incident will be investigated.
