An event that was to be attended by the Minister of Higher Education was abandoned on Saturday due to a protest from students at the South Eastern University. The Minister of Higher Education was to open to the new women’s hostel at the South Eastern University on Saturday, and also lay the foundation stone for the new technology faculty building.

However, students had protested against the minister’s visit since Saturday morning.

The students protesting in front of the main entrance to the university pointed out that the female students have been residing in the hostel, the minister was to open, for four months.

A female student charged that the minister was preparing to put on a political show today and he was arriving here to declare open a hostel that was opened four months ago.

“Students who live in the hostel, have to face many hardships. CCTV cameras have become a main purpose for them”, she said

A representative for the minister arrived at the scene and invited five of the students to hold discussions at a hotel, but the students rejected the offer.

The University administration expressed the following views over the issue.

Speaking on behalf of the U=university administration the Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission,Prof. P.S.M. Gunaratne stated that it is not all: but a certain group of students that are leading the students astray and when the Higher Education Minister was to arrive at the University today, they had commenced a small protest without informing the university authorities

He went on to point out that it is possible that external parties may have influenced the students to do this and that the vice chancellor had decided to grant this hostel based on a request from the students.

Vice Chancellor for the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka , Professor M.M.M. Najim noted that this hostel is the best hostel in the university. The sub-warden of the hostel had informed that there was fierce competition among the female students to get into this hostel.

The Minister of Higher Education faced similar protests from students on Friday too, when he took part in two opening ceremonies at the Trincomalee campus of the Eastern University.
