The Supreme Court issued an interim order preventing the implementation of the increase in Value Added Tax as well as the Nation Building tax. Court held that the interim order wold be operative until the relevant bill is passed in parliament, or until the petitions are fully heard and concluded.

Leader of the National Freedom Front, MP Wimal Weerawansa stated that taxes were collected in an illegal manner without making amends to necessary acts.

He added that the Parliament has the opportunity to reject the bill completely or to amend the tax and money has not been remitted by a single businessman from May 2 to date.

UNP MP, Mujibur Rahuman stated that they had to temporarily increase the tax by four percent since they have to re-pay a sum of Rs. 10 billion which was obtained by the Rajapaksa regime.

UNP MP, Harshana Rajakaruna stated that they hope to reduce VAT as soon as possible to ensure that the people will face any form of justice.
