News 1st’s Think Again – public reflect on choice of public representatives

Have the public representatives that you chose given a value to the vote that you cast?

News 1st’s attempt in giving the people an opportunity to reflect and express their views on their choice of public representatives. On Monday June 21, the Think Again campaign travelled to various locations in the Anuradhapura, Matara and Mullativu districts.

During the journey, the locals from Athuraliya , Ganduwa , Malimbada, Ganegoda, Uyangoda , Unanduwila, Kekunuwela and Dampella in the Matara District shared their thoughts with News 1st, on their elected officials.

Many of those living on the banks of the Nilwala River were keen to elect a public representative in order to resolve their primary issue of obtaining water for irrigation.

And here are some of the comments given by the residents in the area…

“…They are worthless. On the other bank lies a paddy field. the MPs comes here during the elections. After the election, they don’t even sight this place…”

“… Although there is a river that flows through the village, we cant obtain any water for our paddy lands. The supply water to the field has been cut off …”

In the Mullaitivu District, the News 1st team reacged areas such as Pudukudirippu, Maligethivu , Wattuwahal , Keppapilaw and Nayaru.

Here are some responses our teams received in the Mulativu District…

“… A foundation stone was placed for a bus stand, twice. We have no mode of travel. Is this what we voted for? …”

“… We want a better future for our children. Rather than coming here only during elections, build these things for us …”

Fisheries and agriculture are the main sources of income for the people of Pesakulaw in Mullaitivu. However these residents currently face a myriad of issues. According to the charges made by the people, despite many requests public representatives have failed to assit them in uplifting their economy.
