June 17: The body of nine-year-old Malki Sandamali Premasiri, a Grade four student at the Kudalunuka Junior School in Rideemaliyedda, Mahiyanganaya was discovered at about 5 p.m. on Friday, June 17 on the banks of the Ulhitiya Oya, a mere one and a half kilometers from her home.
Little Sandamali usually rides home with her sister on a bicycle from the bus stop after school. However, on Friday June 17, by a cruel twist of fate, she had missed her sister. Alarmed by their daughter not returning home by 2 p.m. her parents began their search for the child with the assistance of neighbors, only to find her dead body in a stream around 5 p.m. (Read More: Death of Mahiyanganaya child – police hunt for killer)
June 19: A 32-year-old suspect, father of two sons living in a nearby village, was arrested in connection to the murder. The arrested suspect had also been actively involved in the search operations to locate nine-year-old Malki Sandamali. According to police, the suspect is to be produced before the Mahiyanganaya Magistrates Court on Monday June 20.
Her remains were sent to the Government Analyst for further investigations, following the post mortem examination carried out by Judicial Medical Officer of the Mahiyanganaya hospital. At present, the remains of Malki Sandamali is lying at her residence.
According to police, a number of samples have been submitted for DNA testing to determine if the child had been raped before being murdered.
June 20: The final rites of little Malki Sandamali were held in the presence of family members and villagers -who gathered in large numbers.
Addiction to alcohol and narcotics has caused the rise in a myriad of issues in the village, as pointed out by an area resident of Kudalunuka.
Meanwhile the suspect who was arrested in connection to the incident was produced before court and was ordered to be further remanded until the 30th of June by Justice Thishani Thenabadu.
Reports says that the 32-year-old father of two was subject to a medical test prior to the court hearing.
