Police are investigating the murder of a nine-year-old girl in the village of Kudalunuka in Mahiyanganaya.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana noted that the investigation is being steered by an SSP.

The lament of the mother upon seeing the body of her daughter, who had left on Friday morning to learn her letters, with her mothers blessing, has shocked the entire village of Kudalunuka.

The body of nine-year-old Malki Sandamili Premasiri, a Grade four student at the Kudalunuka Junior School in Rideemaliyedda, Mahiyanganaya, was discovered at about 5 p.m. on Friday on the bank of the Ulhitiya Oya, a mere one and a half kilometres  from her home.

Police believe that the killer had accosted the child while she was walking home, after disembarking from the bus after school.

Sandamili, who usually rides home with her sister on a bicycle from the bus stop after school, had missed her sister yesterday by a cruel twist of fate. Her parents, who grew alarmed when their daughter had not returned home by 2 p.m., commenced a search for her, with the assistance of neighbours.

They found her body in a stream at about 5 p.m.

The child’s hands had been tied and her shoes and schoolbag were discovered close to the body. After the preliminary examination was conducted by the magistrate last night, the body was taken to the Mahiyanganaya Hospital for the post-mortem examination.

Police believe that the girl had been raped and killed. A police dog used in the search for the girl’s killer had followed a scent up to the school she attended.
