Police fired tear gas and high pressure water cannons to disperse a protest march organised by the Students Association of the Kelaniya University.

A senior-ranked police officer in charge of the Colombo Division, speaking to News 1st, said that police resorted to this measure as the students attempted to move forward, putting down police barricades.

Earlier Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne issued an order preventing the protest march by the university students from moving beyond the Ceramic Junction and proceeding towards the Presidential Secretariat.
