Libyan forces claim that they have retaken control of the port in the city of Sirte from the Islamic state.
Sirte is considered the most significant IS stronghold outside Iraq and Syria.
According to officials warplanes had bombed IS positions in Sirte while naval forces fired missiles in to the port while naval forces fired missiles. The offensive is on-going.
The battle to retake the cityby the forces (aligned to the UN-backed unity government in Tripoli) began last month
According to their spokesperson General Muhammad al-Ghusri senior IS leaders had fled into the desert to the south, but many militants were still under siege in the city centre
