Police say the trees and earth embankments that had collapsed onto certain roads have been removed.

Vehicular movement on roads in Colombo and its city limits have been partially restored. Several areas in Colombo were earlier inundated owing to continuous downpours.

The Peliyagoda area was inundated with mud. Certain areas in Borella were also underwater. By-roads leading up to a number of luxury housing complexes were also inundated. The roads in Maradana, Fort, Colombo and Colpetty were flooded by the rains.

However there were signs of the water levels receding. The Parliamentary Complex was also affected by the inclement weather. The Parliament’s entrance was submerged underwater while the water levels were up to the Parliament’s doorway.

Railway services were also hampered to a certain extent this morning. However, Railway Superintendent Vijaya Samarasinghe said they have been able to operate a continuous train service.
