The Department of Meteorology warns of  rain of over 150mm in several places across the country during the next 24 hours. The Department forecasts showers or thundershowers at most places in the Eastern, Uva, Northern, North Central and Southern provinces.

Sixty (60) persons from 15 families were evacuated from the Baranda Estate in Nawalapitiya due to the risk of landslides.

Divisional Secretary of the Pasbage Korale in Nawalapitiya, Chamila Kumari Amaratunga stated that the decision was made due to the threat of rocks located above the houses falling on to them.

She added that the area will be inspected immediately, with the assistance of the National Building Research Organisation.

The evacuees were moved to the Barandawala Tamil School in Nawalapitiya. Lowlands in Pathamulla and Owilana in Balapitiya were inundated following a heavy rainfall and persons living in 25 houses have been affected.

A woman from Ihalagama , Balangoda died after a tree fell on her. Police said the tree uprooted  during a heavy rainfall on Wednesday night.The deceased was a 65-year-old woman.

Earthslips were reported on several roads in Balangoda,Belihuloya, Pabhahinna, Laduyaya and Ihalagalagama

The Department of Meteorology says that due to an atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, cloudy skies and showery weather can be expected over the country and surrounding sea areas.
