A youth who was knocked down by a train in Wellawatte on Sunday evening, succumbed to her injuries. Deputy Director at the National Hospital said that she passed away on Monday morning.

Nineteen-year-old, Kalimuththu Selvi, who died after the train accident, was a resident of Lulkadura area in Delthotha, Kandy.

Railway Superintendent,Wijeya Samarasinghe said that she was knocked down by a train plying from Panadura at around 4.51 on Sunday evening. The victim was knocked down between the 9 and 9 and 1/2km post located in close proximity to the Wellawatte Train Station. Relatives of the victim said she was with a youth who she was betrothed to.

The victim’s fiance stated that they went to the beach with two of their friends as the Kovil was closed. Thereafter, the friends had left in three-wheeler and had later returned. He added that when she was going to meet her friends who had returned. She was knocked down – even though he had screamed to alert her about the approaching train. He added that she had a mobile in her hand.

Deputy Director at the National Hospital Dr. Samindi Samarakoon said that the young girl was receiving treatment at the Intensive Care unit and had passed away Monday morning.
