Motorists are facing unexpected situations near “No Parking” signposts around the country.

An incident was reported from Anuradhapura where a conversation takes place between a policeman and a civilian with regard to writing a ticket. There are numerous instances where motorists face many hardships as a result of parking near No Parking signs, sometimes due to the ignorance of the law.

Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana explained that only the judiciary has prerogative over the law, and even then there are limitations.

He pointed out that police officers do not have prerogative in enforcing the law and using such a prerogative is a serious wrong, in terms of the constitution. He further stated that it amounts to a violation of fundamental rights – and if a police officer is filing cases based on his prerogative, then it is illegal under police regulations too.

“There are provisions to take action against such steps”, explained  Attorney-at-Law, Ajith Pathirana
