Twelve people were killed and two left missing on Wednesday, April 13, after a gantry crane collapsed at a construction site in Dongguan, an industrial area in Guangdong Province, Southern China.

Strong winds in the area had blown down the crane which collapsed onto a temporary building. According to the Chinese officials, the building was part of a dormitory used by workers. The accident had occurred around 5:40 a.m. (2140 GMT – Tuesday, April 12).

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, One hundred and thirty three migrant workers were sleeping inside the building when the crane collapsed.

As of 1:30 p.m. (0530 GMT) on Wednesday, 12 people were reported dead and two still missing. Reports also say that 69 people managed to escape from the structure at the time of the collapse. 14 of those remain in hospital.

CCTV media reports also say that around 250 rescuers and 40 rescue vehicles were working at the scene.

UPDATE: Six people have been rescued while six more remain trapped at the site.

Less than a month ago, one individual was killed and 35 were injured following a construction site collapse in Kunming City, Yunnan Province.
