The Inspector General of Police presided over an event in Colombo on Saturday, to appreciate the service of police officers.
The event took place at the auditorium of Criminal Records Division and saw 140 officers and several civilians being presented with prizes and certificates.
Among the felicitated were the officers who steered the investigations on the murder of a foreign woman at a Hotel in Tangalle, and the officers who investigated the Rs.35 billion rupee VAT fraud, the largest of such tax fraud to take place in the country.
Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon stated that this is the final awards ceremony that he would attend under his service period.
“What we need to do is encourage the officers to prevent crime and solve crime”, he said and pointed out that the benefits should be enjoyed by the people.
Rs. 19 million had been allocated for the distribution of prizes and prizes worth Rs.12 million were presented.The remaining prizes will be distributed at provincial level.
