Constitutional Assembly convenes in Parliament

The Constitutional Assembly, chaired by Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya, convened for the first time today, Tuesday, April 5. Parliament convened as usual this afternoon and the items in the agenda were taken up in a very short span of time. Thereafter, parliamentary proceedings were postponed to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

When the symbol of authority in Parliament, the Mace was removed, the speaker took a seat below the designated seat in preparation for a working committee session. Thereafter, Parliament commenced its operations and activities as a Constitutional Assembly, a motion which was unanimously passed in Parliament recently.

What is notable is that all 225 parliamentarians are included in to the Constitutional Assembly. The sessions took place in the Parliamentary Chamber.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya stated that the aim is to prepare a constitution that meets the requirements of the country, after seeking the opinion of the people and using the powers of the articles in the constitution.

Seven Deputy Chairmen of the Constitutional Assembly were appointed today.

Leader of the House,Minister Lakshman Kiriella stated that the seven Deputy Chairmen are , Thilanga Sumithapala, A. Adaikkalanathan, Kabir Hashim, Dr. Sudarshanie Fernandopulle,Thilak Marapana, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa

Minister of Parliamentary Reform and Mass Media, Gayantha Karunathilaka propsed that Lakshman Kiriella, Nimal Siripala de silva , Rauff Hakim , Wijedasa Rajapaksha , Susil Premajayantha, Rishard Bathiudeen,Patali Champika Ranawaka , D. M.Swaminathan , Mano Ganeshan, Malik Samarawickrama, R. Sampanthan , Anura Kumara Disanayake, Dilan Perera , Dinesh Gunawardena , Dr.Jayampathi Wickramaratne, M. A. Sumanthiran, Dr. Thusitha Wijemanna, Bimal Ratnayake, Prasanna Ranatunga and Douglas Devananda, be appointed to the Committee and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe be appointed as Chair of the Committee.

The Steering Committee will be tasked with preparing the draft for the new constitution and their first sitting took place today as well.
