Non-academic staff of all universities in the country are currently staging a token strike.
The Inter University Trade Union Joint Committee says that its members have not received several allowances which should be provided by the government.
Thereby, university non-academic staff have been refraining from their duties since Thursday morning, to voice their protest over the issue.
The token strike has affected functions at all universities in the country.
Non-academic staff of all faculties and administration divisions at the University of Peradeniya voiced their objection by refraining from their duties.
Non-academic staff of the Sripalee Campus in Horana also refrained from their duties today. The staff staged a peaceful protest opposite the main entrance to the campus today.
Non-academic staff of eight faculties of the Ruhunu University are taking part in the token strike. Non-academic staff of the Rajarata University also commenced the token strike this morning.
Non-academic staff of the Sabaragamuwa University also refrained from work this morning.
News1st contacted the Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Mohan de Silva on the prevailing situation.
Professor Mohan de Silva admitted that the demands of the non-academic staff are reasonable.He stated that measures are underway to provide solutions to the issues.
