President Maithripala Sirisena declared open the newly-built building complex for the Ministry of Finance, today, Thursday, March 31. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and State Finance Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena were present for the event.
The president declared open the building following religious observances. Speaking on the occasion, the president said:
“I have taken steps to cut down the expenditures of the Presidential Secretariat by 60%.
The President went on to point out that if the previous expenditure was 100 percent, now it is 40 percent, and back then the staff at the Secretariat was 1600, that was cut down to 700.
He went on to point out that during the first two month of the term, 200 vehicles were handed over to state institutions, and no charter flights were used for foreign tours.
“I have ended an era where the public funds were wasted”, charged the president who further stated that SriLankan Airlines incurred a huge loss from charter flights that were kept for three or four days, and the seats were filled with 200 to 300 relatives and associates.
P.M. Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that on Tuesday night the police were notified of two bombs. And they took custody of that, and weapons are recovered at times. And it is not a surprise that hidden weapons are recovered even if there was a larger war than before – and weapons that date back to the second world war are still being discovered.
“Our former friend G.L.Peiris is acting Napoleon”, charged the Premier who went on state that if he knew that the bomb was to be brought to Wellawatte, he must inform the police as to which house it was sent to,
“We will not allow terrorism to rise again”msaid the Prime Minster who pointed out that there are attempts to sabotage the economic development at this time.
Minister of Finance, Ravi Karunanayake noted that Rs.31000 was allocated for a square foot of this building that was declared open today. But it would only cost Rs.12000 for a five-star hotel. So, after incurring such large costs the previous government is raising questions.
“They are questioning us after spending one hundred thousand rupees for a task that can be completed by spending 100 rupees, and thereafter putting this burden on the people making them pay taxes.”charged the Minster of Finance.
