Residents of Bogaswawe in Vavuniya staged a protest on Friday demanding for the renovation of a road. The protest also obstructed the A9 Road.
The group staged the protest demanding the renovation of a road of 49 kilometres from Padaviya to Vavuniya.
JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake, who arrived at the scene charged that this is a main road that is used by 20,000 people and it is being ignored. He stated that different contractors come and stir up the dust and leave but the people in these areas who have suffered during the war have nothing.
District Secretary of Vavuniya Rohana Pushpakumara expressed his views on the matter stating that monetary allocations have been made to construct 21 kilometres of this road, and the contract has been awarded via the Anuradhapura Road Development Authority
“According to the information we have received, the construction of the 21 kilometres will begin by the 5th of April” said District Secretary Pushpakumara. He explained that the engineers of the Road Development Authority have been notified to prepare the estimates for the remaining 25 kilometres and once the estimates are made, and the funds have been allocated, the rest of the construction will begin.
