Traditional clay product manufacturers in the North Western Province staged a demonstration in the Pannala Town on Wednesday, March 16, requesting that laws imposed for extracting clay be lifted.

According to our correspondent, the demonstrators arrived at the Pannala town from the Singappuliya area in Dankotuwa. They thereafter arrived opposite the Pannala residence of Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera later in the evening.

The group staged their demonstration in the Pannala town obstructing all roads. Our correspondent added that the Pannala – Negombo, Pannala – Kuliyapitiya, Pannala – Colombo and Pannala – Kurunegala roads were obstructed as a result of the demonstration.

Police and the riot squad were dispatched to the area to control the demonstration. As no official arrived at the location to look into the issue, the demonstrators marched to the residence of Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera and thereafter a secretary to the minister who arrived at the location held a discussion with the demonstrators.

The protesters say that they will not vacate the premises of the minister until a solution is provided for their issue.
