The Department of Cultural Affairs says that an investigation has been launched following the incident where a couple was harassed by the security at the Independence Square.
Video footage of the incident had gone viral on social media platforms during the past few days. Director to the Department of Cultural Affairs Anusha Gokula said that through investigations the department hopes to find out the sequence of events which lead to the incident.
She added that the Independence square is a historic monument which could be visited by any, in line with safeguarding the site’s pride and honour.
Demonstrators gathered at the Independence square to mark their protest against the incident in question.
Chairman of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, Asela Iddawela stated that the Operations Director of the Private Security Company, which is affiliated in assigning security guards to the Independence Square, has been suspended.
