President Maithripala Sirisena presided over a special cabinet meeting on Friday evening.

Minister Lakshman Kiriella speaking in Kandy, on Saturday commented on the debt and the revenue of the government,  stating that the country’s economy was the main focus at the meeting.

The Minister of University Education and Highways, stated that during the meeting, the state of the nation which was governed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the People’s Alliance and the United People’s Freedom Alliance over the past two decades, was discussed.

The minster explained that the revenue of the government for this year is not enough to repay the debt, and the interest obtained by the previous government. And they governed the country for two decades and left the country in a situation where it cannot generate revenue to repay even loan installments and interest.

“How can we do any other work? How are we to construct roads and school? We have no capital” charged the Minister noting that due to this situation, help has to be obtained from other nations.
