The national ceremony to felicitate the sportsmen and women who won medals for Sri Lanka at the South Asian Games took place at Temple Trees.
Monetary awards were also presented to the medal winners at the recently concluded South Asian Games, and their coaches, in order to encourage them.
Addressing the event Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that there is link between sports and politics and that the late president J.R Jayewardene had once said that politics is like a game of cricket, because you need to play with the captain of the team without division. He said that it is also like rugby since you have to play hard in order to win, and it is also like boxing because you must punch the opponent to fall, and it is like a game of chess because politics require a lot of thinking.
It is also like a marathon, said the premier, recalling the words of the late President Jayewardene, and went on to explain that not everyone can win gold or silver medals – and the game cannot be stopped simply because no medals were won.
“Sportsmen are born from schools” said the premier, adding that the government has the responsibility to intervene and construct grounds and indoor stadiums.
In his address, President Sirisena charged that there is high level of selfishness, narrow-minded attempts, divisions, jealousy and discrimination in the sports sector, politics, arts and even in the media.
“I am aware of this, because I served as the Chairman of two sports unions”, said President Sirisena, who went on to note that elements like selfishness, dividing into groups, tug-of-war- prevailing in the fields of the politics, media and art are the main obstacles to victory.
He added that there is a need to operate on the policy where the talented individual must be given his or her due place.
The president went on to stress the importance of equitable distributions of benefits to the villages and towns, noting that after you win, people will start to look at you and then they will start to look into your flaws – and it is the same in politics.
The official website for the Presidential Sports Awards Ceremony 2016 which will take place in May, was launched by President Maithripala Sirisena.
