Former minister,MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage, is a political figure who has held a various positions of political power in the recent past
He hails from the district of Kandy, representing the United People’s Freedom Alliance and has held ministerial portfolios as the Deputy Minister of Power and Energy,Deputy Minister of Samurdhi Development, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Skills Development and the Minister of Sports
On March 26, 2014, the former minster of sports was granted bail by the Hatton Magistrate;s Court, over the assault on a supporter of the Ceylon Workers Congress
On February 2, 2015, the JVP files complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on financial irregularities at the Ministry of Sports. The Criminal Investigations Department requested court for authorisation to obtain bank details of Mahindananda Aluthgamage for investigations on his assets.
Following this move, the CID grilled Mahindananda Aluthgamage under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The Financial Crimes Investigations Division launched an investigation over Rs.40 million rupee financial fraud committed under the guise of bringing down carrom and checkers’ boards for the Sports Ministry.
Following the conclusion of the previously held general election, a letter bearing the signatures of 56 parliamentarians submitted to the president requesting for the post of chief organiser, but the request was rejected by the president.
Convener for the Voice Against Corruption,Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that information on ‘countless amounts’ of transactions made by former minster Aluthgamage in regard to the Sugathadhasa Indoor Stadium during his tenure as Sports Minister, as well as information on how he bought land in the Kandy , Nawalapitiya,Nawala and Narahenpita during his tenure as Deputy Minister of Power have been presented
“How did he manage to swindle so much of money?” charged Mr.Samarasinghe, further questioning how the former minster has money to run two duty-free shops at the terminal of the Katunayake Airport?
He further added that a large amount of information on these matters have been provided. However this government has failed to serve justice to any of these investigations.
