Parliament was in uproar on Wednesday with Speaker of the House, Karu Jayasuriya, saying that he had received death threats. He did not state who had issued the threats dismissing it saying ” I do not know who threatened me but it doesn’t matter to me.”
This prompted Dullas Alahapperuma, UPFA MP, to ask the Speaker to investigate the death threat. His reasoning was that if the identity of the issuer of the threat was not ascertained then ” this will transform into a major political allegation against us- that we did it.”
However, the Speaker of the House made it clear that the threat was made in connection to the demands being made by the Joint Opposition, which Dullas Alahapperuma is a part of. The Joint Opposition has stated that they wish to be recognised as a separate political party in Parliament though many of their members are from the ranks of the SLFP.
The Speaker said he was told “I would be killed if I do not do this”
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe accused the joint opposition of ” worshipping Mahindaramaya” and said the issue of the Joint Opposition would be resolved “through discussions”.
