Tensions begin to ease in Embilipitiya

Police say that the security has been increased in Embilipitiya following protests on Thursday, January 7. The protests were carried out by locals in the area.

A tense situation arose in Embilipitiya after a youth succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, while receiving treatment for serious injuries sustained after falling from the top floor of a building during a clash early Tuesday morning.

During the protest on Thursday, residents burnt tyres, charging that the police were involved in the death of the 29-year-old youth

According to Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara, the situation is currently peaceful. The police media spokesperson stated that  support of the Police Special Task Force will be requested, if the need arises.

Twenty one police officers, including the police inspector of the Embilipitiya police station, were transferred on Thursday evening over the incident.
