PM Wickremesinghe stands firm on decision to sign FTAs with India and other nations (VIDEO)

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the Government will proceed with signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries such as India, Pakistan, China and Singapore.

Addressing the “Invest in East-2016” forum the premier elaborated that the Government has received a mandate from the people to sign these agreements and also to proceed with obtaining GSP+ concessions.

The Prime Minister warned those in the private sector who wish to undermine these efforts by stating that “if anyone in the private sector tries to fund against it (referring to the FTA’s), we are prepared to stand-up and expose them” he also noted that “..those traitors will not be allowed to lift their heads up again..”

PM Wickemesinghe reiterated that the Government will go ahead with signing these agreements and will not “let anyone stand in the way.”

”Invest In East – 2016′ which is the second International Investment Promotion Forum for the Eastern Province was held in Colombo on Thursday the 28th of January 2016.

The forum was held with the aim to promote local and foreign investment opportunities in the Eastern Province with emphasis placed on the importance of Free Trade Agreements and developing particular sectors such as the IT sector.

Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama speaking at the event said that the government is attaching the highest priority to rapid transformation of the Sri Lankan economy to create one million livelihoods and increase the income of people over the next four to five years.

He also said that in order to take advantage of these overall changes in the landscape Sri Lanka must capitalize on the country’s proximity to India adding that they are planning to deepen bilateral relations through the Indo-Lanka Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement.

Also speaking at the occasion BOI director general, Duminda Ariyasinghe noted that Sri Lanka plans to increase the revenue generated through IT industry exports from US$ 1 billion to US$ 5 billion by 2020.

Eastern Province Governor Austin Fernando and Chief Minister Hafeez Naseer Ahamed were also present at the occasion.
