Incidents of causing obstruction to hold a free and fair election were reported during elections that took place in the past. The distribution of Sil cloth during an election period was a hot topic for months.
It was announced by the police that a sum of Rs. 600 million had been spent to distribute Sil cloth during the period of the Presidential Election in 2015. On January 2, 2015, Election Officers seized a stock of Sil cloth that had been moved to distribute among the people of Keragala, Dompe. Once again, during the same period, there was an attempt to distribute Sil cloth among the worshippers who had flocked to the Delpita Raja Maha Viharaya in Rideegama on Poya Day.
According to the Chief Incumbent of the temple, the Sil cloth was given to him by the UPFA Organiser of Rideegama.
On January 14, 2015, police seized a stock of 1700 Sil cloth from a house in Polonnaruwa.
Another stock of Sil cloth, umbrellas and Buddhist publications were discovered from a storage facility at the Kegalle District Secretariat.
