The Attorney General has instructed the IGP to hand over the investigations, over the murder of a youth in Embilipitiya, to the Criminal Investigations Department.

A demonstration took place on Saturday, January 23, against the police for causing obstruction when reporting on a case pertaining to the incident. The All Ceylon Provincial Correspondents Association organised a march which commenced from opposite the Embilipitiya Main Bus Stand.

According to journalist Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa, six journalists had visited the Embilipitiya Court to report on the recording of statements in order to inform the people of Sri Lanka of the situation.

Explaining further, journalist Siril Jayaweera stated that the police forcefully took away the notebooks from   journalists present. Journalist Dharmasiri Lankapeli stated that the incident is a threat to media freedom, and that the journalists are prepared to defeat them.
