Several groups, including former heads of local government institutions, public representatives who represented the Dambulla Urban Council and the Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha, convened a media briefing on Wednesday, January 20.

Former Mayor of Dambulla, Jaliya Opatha stated that the people who seek votes by using Mahinda Rajapaksa’s name are not welcome. He added that as members of SLFP, they can achieve victory if the president involves the programme of Mahinda Rajapaksa, and move ahead.

Members of the alliance who represented local government institutions in the Anuradhapura District, convening a media briefing, commented on the local government polls.

Former Mayor of Anuradhapura, H.P. Somadasa stated that when they arrive at villages, people state that they are disappointed over the SLFP, and that they have therefore decided to contest in the elections by joining a new party.

The Association of UPFA Pradeshiya Sabha Chairmen of the Kandy District, speaking to the media, expressed a different opinion.

Chairman of Association of UPFA Pradeshiya Sabha Chairmen of the Kandy District, Asela Ekanayake stated that it will be difficult for them to secure victory at the local government polls if the SLFP splits.
