The United National Party convened a media briefing on Tuesday, January 19. Minister of Power and Renewable Energy, Ajith P. Perera stated that Mahinda Rajapaksa is unaware that the Executive Presidency and the electoral system are both in the constitution, even though he notes that he wants to abolish it and change the constitution.

He added that the former president wants to “patch up” the system he carried on, and bring about the 20th amendment to the constitution

State Minister of International Trade, Sujeewa Senasinghe questioned whether Mahinda Rajapaksa has an understanding about the law since he is silent in parliament and gives speeches to the media at the temple, which is confusing.

After a question was asked about the investigations done on the previous government, Sujeewa Senasinghe noted that he is not satisfied with the investigations as some officials who were appointed by the previous government are still working in the police and at the Attorney General’s. Department.

He stated that therefore the investigation processes could be hampered because of their loyalties

Furthermore, after a question arose on the mechanism to reform the police department, he stated that the government should use finances to pay police officers who are on the streets 24 hours a day.
