Convening a media briefing on Monday, Jan. 18, General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva criticised the government heavilly.

Silva noted that the main slogans employed during the previous presidential run-off were democracy and good governance. But now since being appointed to power, they have forgotten all of it and goes ahead with their own businesses as usual, he alleged.

He added that the reason for this is because of the mixed-up politics when taking a decision to arrest someone they have carried investigations on. He went on to note that until the budget and the constitution are passed, all other investigations have been set aside for later, not even after the upcoming elections as both the rogues and the ones who were sent to catch these rogues are governing together.

Explaining further, he added that the deal is among those within the government and the SLFP who are outside the government. Even though it was heavily criticised, Mahinda Rajapaksa was not even in the chambers for the voting, he said.

Further, he added that Wimal Weerawansa of the Joint Opposition ‘who screams about it all the time’ was not even in the country for the third reading of the budget. In addition, he alleged, the prime minister had facilitated the renewing of his passport and went overseas as it was they who struck the deal. He said this gives rise to the question as to whether this deal covers up vast amounts of property of the people and other corruption.
