A 15-year-old boy and his mother — both of whom were arrested in connection with an accident at the Dematogoda level crossing that killed a mother and daughter — have been further remanded.
The duo were further remanded when their bail application was taken up on Monday, Jan. 18.
The Magistrate’s Court, which rejected the motion for bail, issued an order that the chief suspect and his mother be remanded until Jan. 28 and Jan. 25, respectively. The fatal accident, which claimed the lives of a 47-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter, occurred at a pedestrian crossing on the Baseline Road.
News 1st monitored the pedestrian crossing for several hours on Jan. 18 morning, as this is an area that residents claim that they have highlighted multiple times as a dangerous one for pedestrians. The Dematagoda Police too had informed the Road Development Authority on several occasions of the danger at this location. On Monday, the Traffic Division of the Dematagoda Police requested that the RDA place speed bumps at this location.
The remains of the victims were brought to the residence of a relative on Sunday night. The husband and father of the victims had also passed away ten years ago on Jan. 15. The 20-year-old elder daughter, who works at an apparel factory, had been living at the home of a relative due to the unsecured location of the family’s home. Her mother and little sister fell victim to this tragedy, when they were returning home following a daily visit to the elder sister.
