The five-year plan for the Pibidemu Polonnaruwa District Development Project, commenced under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday January 17.

The road system in the Polonnaruwa District is to be re-developed under this project. Construction work on the Polonnaruwa town ring road, commenced today.

Speaking during the event, President Sirisena said that when the former president visited the agrarian community in Polonaruwa in 2013, he bemoaned the state of the roads.

He said:

I said at the time that roads are being rebuilt in many districts in Sri Lanka except here. At the time, I did not imagine that I would become the President of the country and that I would have the opportunity to rebuild the roads in Sri Lanka.’

He went onto note that he looked at the entire country with a single vision.

However, the President also said that he will be travelling to Germany in February which also marks the first time in forty two years that a head of state from Sri Lanka has received an official invitation to Germany.
