A youth was assaulted and detained by police in the Talawakelle town on Friday, January 15. The incident created a tense situation in the area.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police who is in charge of the area arrived at the location to control the situation. According to the News 1st correspondent at the scene, the situation is now under control.
It was a youth named Hashan Tillakeratne who had to face the incident when he reached the Thalawakele Town Thursday (Jan 14) night to purchase vegitables.
According to the Three-wheel driver who was hired by Hashan to reach the town to buy goods.
“I helped him load the studd in to the three-wheeler”- said the Three Wheel Driver who was hired by Hashan noting that the Police OIC, who was in his civil attire, came in his car and asked the driver and the youth to leave. The driver added that the Police OIC then called Hashan up to his car, slapped him before getting out of the vehicle to kick the youth.
The Three-Wheel driver noted that following the beating Hashan was put in the car and taken away. Furthermore, the driver added that when he reached the police and handed over the identity card, the Police sent them off saying that it is not required and that Hashan will be let go in the morning.
The youth who was allegedly assaulted, was admitted to the Lindula Hospital on Friday (Jan 15) morning.
More reports say that when a relative of the youth visited the Thalawakele Police to bail him, he too had been assaulted by the Police.
The relative is also being treated at the Lindula Hospital.
The people of Lindula staged a demonstration against the police on Friday evening.
The furious demonstrators dispersed only after the ASP of the area arrived at the locations and promised an investigation into the incident.
