The topic of the formulation of a new constitution was taken up for debate in Parliament on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan stated that the country has unfortunate experience of being ruled by constitutions that don’t have the consensus of the people.

He added that this error has to be corrected if all the people in the country are to evolve in to a single nation. Therefore, he said, they are seeking a method to resolve the national issue within the framework of a united, undivided and indivisible country.

He went on to note that the people of this country need the help of Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as he has to place his interests and well-being before anything to positively contribute to this initiative.
