The Ministry of Transport has announced plans to reduce traffic congestion on roads by developing public transport.
Secretary to the Ministry S. Somaweera said that traffic congestion can be reduced by travelling via trains and buses. He added that issues have arisen as the number of train carriages in operation are insufficient to meet the high demand for train travel.
The secretary added that steps have been taken to bring down 20 locomotive engines for railway services on the up-country railway-line. Meanwhile. plans are afoot to establish a car park in close proximity to the Kandy Railway Station to encourage the public to park their vehicles there and to travel to Colombo by train.
