Co-convener of the Joint Trade Union Alliance of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board Upali Ratnayake said a strike has been launched to express opposition to slashing of salary bonuses.
Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo on Thursday, Upali Ratnayake, stated that they have informed the administration that they cannot accept the slash on their bonus and that they will continue their trade union action until it is been given.
He added that the action will come into effect as a token strike where maintenance employees will refrain from reporting for duties on Saturday and Sunday, as they will carry on the essential services by taking into consideration, the inconvenience that will be caused to the general public.
He went on to note that water board employees countrywide would engage in a three-hour protest movement on Monday from 9 a.m. to noon. He added that they would resort to a major trade union action if their bonuses are not given.
