Dramatic scenes unfolded in Kapuwatte, Dambulla when a seventeen-year-old school boy who fainted on top of a king coconut tree was rescued and lowered to the ground in an operation that lasted for hours.
The Fire Brigade of the Dambulla Municipal Council made a valiant effort to lower the boy down unscathed.
This schoolboy had climbed on to the king coconut tree without heeding to warnings given by his father, not to do so. While he was on the tree, he had fainted and the leaves of the tree had prevented him from crashing on to the grounds.
However, it took many hours for the villagers and rescuers assisted by the Dambulla Police to safely bring the boy down.
Our correspondent, who was at the location, stated that the rescue operation lasted for around two hours. The boy remained unconscious even when he was lowered. He was later rushed to the Dambulla Base Hospital.
The boy stated that he had climbed the tree to pluck some king coconuts. He said:
I fainted. I regained conscious in the hospital …”
Hospital staff said that a fear of heights may have caused the boy to faint.
Family and friends heaved a sigh of relief as a happening that could have ended in tears, came to a safe and happy end.
