The gazette notification including the reduction of prices of milk powder, dried fish, dhal and other essential goods, has been submitted to the Government Press. Authorities say the reduced prices will come into effect on Thursday.
Minister of Finance, Ravi Karunanayake stated:
We have ensured that the consumer benefits, wherever it is possible, and in certain instances, changes have been made with regard to luxury goods. But in the case of everyday goods like milk powder, potatoes, onions and the tin of mackerel, we had reduced the prices for the benefit of the people and we have increased the prices of luxury goods. We have increased prices where we need to discourage imports and we are charging people who are able to pay in some sectors, not all.
