Different views were expressed on the Budget 2016 by several opposition political factions.

JVP Propaganda Secretary, Vijitha Herath stated:

When the UNP came into power, they did not take measures to stop casinos but instead legalised it by making amendments to the taxes imposed.

He further stated:

They are attempting to create a break-the-banks economy, which will result in massive destruction to the villages

Meanwhile, MP, D.E.W Gunasekera stated:

They have removed all taxes imposed on the elite and handed it over to the middle class. This is a neo-liberal budget in its true essence as the Budget is formulated by a cartel of four people – what is done is it is been read in Paliament.

He added that it is Ranil Wickremesinghe, Malik Samarawickrema, Charitha Ratwatta and Baskaralingam who make the budget.

Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thero speaking on the issue stated:

That this is a voucher oriented economy, since vouchers are used for everything.

He added:

The ones who raised their hands and agreed should remember to bring a bigger bundle of papers when they go to the villages.
