The cabinet of ministers, on Wednesday, approved the proposals presented by President Maithripala Sirisena to abolish the Executive Presidency.
The time frame of enforcing the proposal was detailed at the Cabinet Media Briefing held on the morning of Thursday, November 19.
Speaking to the press, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka said that President Maithripala Sirisena was successful in passing the 19th Amendment to the Constitution under the 100- days government.
The Minister said:
He presented a special cabinet paper to yesterday’s cabinet meeting regarding the abolishing of Executive Presidency and transfer of powers to the Parliament and to introduce a more democratic electoral system. He made a pledge on this at the presidential elections. He took the initiative to present a cabinet paper. ”
Speaking further the minister said that he sees that initiative as one that was carried out, casting aside any party differences.
