The Department of Meteorology stated that the depression in the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a low pressure area and is moving away from Sri Lanka. He stated that it is likely to enter Indian land mass through North Tamil Nadu coast by Monday night.
Under the influence of the system, showery weather and cloudy skies are expected to continue in the northern parts and southwestern coastal areas of the country today.
Possibility for strong wind over the country and surrounding sea area is still high.
The Department went on to note that the prevailing showery weather over the country is expected to reduce to some extent today.
However, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern and Southwestern coastal areas of the country. Showers or thundershowers will develop elsewhere particularly after 02.00 p.m. Heavy falls (about 100 mm) are also likely at some places.
Furthermore, the Provincial Education Secretary said that all schools in the Northern Province will be closed today owing to the inclement weather.
