Today marks World Diabetes day. The  day is being marked under the theme Healthy living starts at Breakfast.

A special walk has been organised from the Independence Square to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo on Saturday in view of  World Diabetes Day.

Meanwhile, health units say that 20 percent of the public living in urban areas are suffering from diabetes.

Chairman of the Endocrine Society of Sri Lanka Consultant  Dr. Uditha Bulugahapitiya said that 6 to 8 percent of the public living in villages suffer from diabetes.

According to the consultant, small children and students too have fallen prey to diabetes.

Chairman of the Endocrine Society of Sri Lanka, Dr. Bulugahapitiya pointed out that a trend can be seen in pregnant mothers becoming diabetics.

He went on to say that diabetes affects all the organs in the body and pointed out that diabetes could result in strokes, paralysis, kidney failure and blindness.
