Views were expressed on the SLFP’s campaign for upcoming local government elections. at separate events held on Sunday.

Chief Minister for the Western Province, Isura Devapriya stated that the national government concept is in parliament and it does not exist in the provincial councils or local councils. B ecause the SLFP and UNP cannot contest elections together, they will have to do so separately, as has been done in our political history.

Treasurer of SLFP, MP S.B. Dissanayake stated:

Although the Communist Party and the Sama Samaja Party contested elections under our alliance, they are not together with the coalition. We are working towards holding talks with them in the future.

He stated:

Everyone in the SLFP will contest under the symbol of the betel leaf of the UPFA, and Ranil Wickremesinghe will provide leadership to the UNP and Maithripala Sirisena will provide leadership to the SLFP –  so they are the respective leaders of both parties.

When questioned on the five groups that have been said to have ‘fallen’ he stated:

Yes, there is a possibility that some groups may not rejoin, some are forming new groups and there are some who will not be accepted even if they seek to rejoin and the Alliance will be stronger than last time.
