The Marine Environment Protection Authority has commenced a national workshop to create awareness on the 5th annex of the International MARPOL Convention.

The MARPOL Convention is the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships, and includes six annexes.

MARPOL Annex 5 came into effect on December 31, 1988. It specifies the distances from land in which materials may be disposed of, and subdivides different types of garbage and marine debris.

Sri Lanka too is a partnering country of this annex. A briefing was held on Monday, October 5, to educate the relevant individuals regarding the amendments that have been made to MARPOL 5.

International Maritime Organisation Technical Officer, Sun Jun stated that the purpose of this workshop is to raise awareness on the rising issues of the garbage from ships, and from other families.
