The suspect in the murder of little Seya Sadewmi in Kotadeniyawa, was brought to Colombo for a DNA examination on Monday.
The suspect was brought to Colombo amid tight security. He was taken away after the DNA tests carried out at Genetech in Borella.
Meanwhile, the school student and a 33-year old man who were previously arrested and remanded in connection with the murder of Seya Sedewmi were produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate’s court on Monday.
The police had requested that the suspects be granted bail, as the DNA report is yet to be received.A group of lawyers who are old boys of the school the student was from, represented him at the court hearing today.
The group of lawyers pointed out that the student who is to sit for the Advanced Level Examination next year, has been subject to a major embarrassment due to his arrest.
They submitted that the arbitrary arrest of innocents poses questions regarding the safety of other citizens as well. The lawyers noted that it is unjust to accuse someone of murder, simply based on the fact that the person in question has inappropriate content on their laptop.
The lawyers charged that the boy had been assaulted while in police custody and requested that he be subject to examination by the Judicial Medical Officer. The magistrate granted permission for this and ordered that the suspects be examined by the JMO at the Negombo Hospital, before October 2.
The OIC of the Kotadeniyawa Police, Sujith Udaya Kumara noted that the student was arrested based on a statement made by his mother, noting that he stayed out until late in the night and associated with unsavoury individuals.
The OIC added that the other suspect was taken into custody since he had changed the appearance of his hair and beard after the murder. The case is to be taken up again on October 2.
Meanwhile, the suspect in the recent shooting at the premises of the Kaduwela Court Complex, was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala ordered that the suspect be returned to remand custody until October 7
