President Maithripala Sirisena who is in the United State of America to attend the United Nations General Assembly held discussion with a number of heads of states.
The 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly commenced at 07:30 on Friday evening, Sri Lankan time. The UN General Assembly on sustainable development commenced with the address of His Holiness the Pope.
Heads of states of over 150 countries including the Sri Lankan President, diplomats and state representatives are attending the UNGA. President Maithripala Sirisena met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a discussion on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Co-operation between Sri Lanka and India and the progress of SAARC were discussed at this meeting. The Indian Prime Minister, who congratulated the President on the election victories, has promised that India would support Sri Lanka in its future endeavours.
President Maithripala Sirisena who is incidentally the Chair of the Commonwealth had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the next Commonwealth Session in Malta. President Maithripala Sirisena had also met with Simonetta Sommaruga, the President of the Swiss Confederation.
The President of the Swiss Confederation had noted that many Sri Lankans are living in Switzerland and added that it would support Sri Lanka in its course of development. President Sirisena had said that Sri Lanka hopes for Swiss support in the development of the North and East.
President Maithripala Sirisena also met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer. Peter Maurer has recalled the ICRC’s role in humanitarian services in the North and East during the war had added that the ICRC hopes to work together with Sri Lanka in the future.
